Trilogy Sunday

It was December 17, 2003 that we went to Trilogy Tuesday! I was reminded of it as I was clicking around the channels today. TNT was running a "Trilogy Sunday", that is they played all the Lord of the Rings movies in order. They ran all day. I remembered with great fondness our Trilogy Tuesday fun in 2003. You see we had been waiting for The Return Of The King to be released. We had bought the music, watched the web site for any updates and waited...... Then one day we saw they were going to run all the movies (the first two were the extended versions) one after the other ending with the new one. We scrambled to get tickets, which sold out in just minutes on line (thank God for Fandango). My son, husband and I were in! We were so excited. I had never done anything like that before and most people thought we were so weird. That day we went in line at about 9:00 AM, as I recall, and the movies started at noon. We were about 50 people back in line. In line we competed for prizes by doing dorky things like answering trivia and acting out scenes. One competition was to sing the Hobbit drinking song from The Fellowship of the Ring. Thankfully it was the age of cell phones so we called our friend Marti and she and her family graciously put the movie in and found the song. They called us back with the words and we sang it and won a prize! We had such a great time. Some people say things like "I could never sit that long"...and I think..."well you probably sit that long on flying or driving trips". The truth is there were breaks in between the movies. It was so wonderful seeing movies like that with the true fans. They are respectful of everyone's movie viewing. There was no cell phones going off, no kids crying, no rude adults, just a lot of respect for the books and enjoyment of the movies! The picture above is of our Christmas tree that year. We bought a "white" tree to commemorate our love of the story (the white tree of Gondor) and didn't decorate it except with the flag you see. I would have rather had the one representing Aragorn, but the one we won was the one representing the evil Sauron. I am sure it looked strange to anyone who happened by our home, but I didn't care. We love those books and were finally happy that they were made so amazingly into movies. We were the ones who stood in line in the 70's for "Lord of the Rings" and it turned out to be a cartoon, a lame one at that. It was a nice surprise to see TNT playing the movies today on the anniversary of our fun experience 3 years ago. But, I would have liked it much better if they didn't have commercials. I keep hoping they will do it again this time with all three extended versions of the movies in the theaters that is. I am sure there are enough fans to participate! Well, it was a special day for me! I don't know if we will ever have that kind of experience again.

That was the flag I wanted to win!

Hobbit Drinking Song:
Hey, ho to the bottle I go,
To heal my heart and drown my woe,
Rain may fall and wind may blow,
But there still be... many miles to go!
Sweet is the sound of the pouring rain,
And the stream that falls from hill to plain,
Better than rain or rippling brook,
Is a mug of beer inside this Took!
Thanks Marti for all the help that day! You were there with us in spirit!

Now to explain one thing. As a Christian I realize some people think these movies are evil. They were written by a Christian man named J.R.R. Tolkien. He shared his faith with C.S. Lewis and Lewis became a Christian and then wrote the wonderful children's series of books, The Chronicles of Narnia. Lewis intended the stories to be an analogy of the sacrifice Jesus made for mankind. Tolkien on the other hand did not try and write an analogy yet many of the themes in the books have obvious Christian overtones. To read more about this buy the book "Finding God In The Lord Of The Rings" by Kurt D. Bruner and Jim Ware.
