Who knew?

We are so loved by all of our congregation! Not long ago I talked about how we get lots of Disney gifts. Another thing we get a lot of is just about anything coffee. Well, Gene gets it. :D I get to enjoy the gifts as well! This was one of those surprise gifts. It is a mug...but not just any mug. It is a mug from Monticello! Apparently Thomas Jefferson loved coffee!

As evidenced by this quote!

Other things to know about Jefferson and Coffee-

In 1824 Thomas Jefferson deemed coffee "the favorite drink of the civilized world." Jefferson enjoyed the coffee houses of Williamsburg and Paris, and served coffee at the President's House, Poplar Forest, and Monticello. He preferred beans imported from the East and West Indies, and abhorred the "green" or unripe beans that were popular in America at the time.

Jefferson estimated that a pound of coffee a day was consumed at Monticello during his retirement. His cellar was stocked with unroasted beans in barrels weighing as much as sixty pounds. Small quantities of beans were roasted and ground in the Monticello kitchen, and then prepared according to the recipe of Adrien Petit, Jefferson's French maître d'hôtel:

"On one measure of the coffee ground into meal pour three measures of boiling water. Boil it on hot ashes mixed with coal till the meal disappears from the top, when it will be precipitated. Pour it three times through a flannel strainer. It will yield 2 1/3 measures of clear coffee."

Coffee was served at breakfast, and likely after dinner, in a silver coffee urn made to Jefferson's design.

Information taken from here! Check out this site for more about Thomas Jefferson.

Now don't you feel educated? Hey Luke, how do you like this mug?

Coffee with Jesus

We watched Cecilia last week while her parents were on an Alaska cruise. We went to church on Sunday and went into the office while we were waiting to go home. In my husband's office is a strange collection of items given to him as gifts. Many of them are "joke" items. While waiting, CJ decided to "make coffee" for Jesus. He has a bobble head and an action figure Jesus. Cecilia took both of them and started positioning them along with the Disneyland coffee tins. Maybe she will grow up to be a barista! Or maybe she will just love coffee time, especially with Jesus!

McCafe, who knew?

A few days ago while channel surfing my husband and I stumbled upon a show on the travel channel called World's Best Fast Food Stops. The guy they were interviewing plans his vacations around McDonald's that he has never been to. I was strangely intrigued with the idea of this kind of vacation, but not enough to give up my Disneyland trips! It was truly an educational program. Lots of information but what I was truly amazed to find was there are McCafe's!

Apparently there are a few of these and they don't sell the regular McDonald's items. Armed with this knowledge I promptly went to my favorite stop, eBay!

I found this great espresso cup and saucer and bought it for my husband! It came today and I am so happy with my find! It is nice and heavy and has a great "feel". Can't wait to see him have his espresso in it! It seems pretty "rare", as I have not found any others for sale. Here is the description:

THIS ITEM WAS A SAMPLE AT THE WORLD WIDE OWNER & OPERATOR CONVENTION IN 2000!

I am still amazed at the concept of a McDonald's coffee shop. I wonder if the coffee is any good?

Racing monkeys? Cuban coffee? No Birds?

I came home from work yesterday and had a package from my long time friend, Marti. We have known each other since 1975 or maybe even 74. We lost touch for a few years there but now we have some kind of contact each day. I must admit, I thought she forgot about me, now that she is famous and all. ;-)
She just came back from a trip to Florida with her mom and daughter. I'm not sure exactly what it was (being a "gringo" and all) but it was some kind of migration back to the Cuban roots, or as close as you can get to Cuba. You can read all about it on her blog, click HERE.

While there she picked up a lovely demitasse cup and saucer (my favorite) that had a palm tree with the words CUBA on it (her favorite) and some great looking coffee, which I can't wait to try. I want to be able to tell her friend over at Babalu that I love the coffee. I plan to try it soon.....maybe tonight!
Friendship is such a blessing, and I truly appreciate you Marti! Hope you have a great summer.
I loved the movie Jon did of the monkeys! How cute was that?
Check out Jon's movie below.

Know what I miss?

Don't you miss Juan Valdez? I was watching a special on the history of coffee. They mentioned how they brought coffee back in favor with the character Juan Valdez. Then I started to smile remembering how Juan and his burrow were everywhere. Anytime you opened a cupboard there he was giving you the can of coffee. I really miss those commercials. I guess there is a new face of Juan Valdez, but I never see a commercial. I think the world is better off with Juan Valdez, don't you?

I can live for a few more days!

I just received our shipment of Gourmet Spanish Coffee! I can continue on another few days! It is late tonight and I really want a cup of cappuccino, but I wouldn't be able to sleep. So I am sitting here dreaming of my delicious cup that my husband makes for me around 7:30. Then we are hoping go to the big dog show that happens each year. I see that only 4 Shibas are entered. I guess they are just not that popular here. Then we will run a couple of errands (Friday is our day off). When we do get home I will have another wonderfully made cappuccino. Out of these beans that are 100% treated with a sugar coating! Can't you just smell it?

If you haven't tried this, you really should! I feel you are really missing a great joy in life. In the morning I will add the picture of the cappuccino with the wonderful foamed milk! When you see
that you will want to have your own!
